ECONOMIC STIMULUS BENEFITS FOR SOCIAL SECURITY AND SSI RECIPIENTS

Posted on November 3rd, 2009

Many clients have been calling us about unexpected $250 checks they have been receiving or which have been direct deposited into their bank accounts. These one time payments are the result of the Economic Stimulus legislation known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, which was enacted in February, 2009.

This payment is available to any Social Security or SSI beneficiary who was eligible for a regular benefit payment at any time from November, 2008 through January, 2009. The payment of the one time stimulus check was made in May, 2009.

If you were found eligible after May, 2009 to receive benefits for any time during the November, 2008 through January, 2009 period, you are still eligible to receive the $250 payment. For example, if you received a favorable decision from a Social Security ALJ in October, 2009, awarding benefits retroactive to a date prior to January, 2009, you are still entitled to your stimulus check. The SSA is reviewing its records for newly eligible recipients on a monthly basis through December, 2009 and on a bi-monthly basis throughout 2010. Under the legislation, no payments are permitted to be made after December, 2010.

Children who receive auxilliary benefits are not eligible for the stimulus payment, however adult children who receive disability benefits on a parent’s record will receive a payment.
